LG’s BH08LS20 Has World’s Fastest Blu-ray Recording

Blu-ray discs have been embraced by entertainment lovers and technology geeks for a variety of reasons. The discs are resistent to scratches and fingerprints and hold more data than traditional DVDs.

The Blu-ray format can hold up to 25 gigabytes (GB) of data on a single-layer disc and 50 GB on a dual-layer disc. Blu-ray’s increased storage capacity is more than five times what can be stored on a traditional DVD.

LG Electronics’ BH08LS20 8x Blu-ray Super Multi Drive with LightScribe is an internal Blu-ray writer for computers. LG’s writer accepts double-layer Blu-ray discs and DVD +R/+RW.

The Super Multi Drive features the world’s faster writing speed of 8x for Blu-ray. It can also record at 16x for DVDs and 40x for compact discs (CDs) and re-write at 2x for Blu-ray, 8x for DVDs and 24x for CDs.

Erasing discs with the BH08LS20 takes just 18 seconds for a quick erase and a full erase can be performed in just under 3 ½ minutes.

Playback speed is automatically controlled to reduce noise when playing media. It’s maximum reading speed is 6x for Blu-ray, 16x for DVDs and 40x for CDs.

A serial advanced technology attachment or S-ATA is used by the BH08LS20 for an enhanced computing platform.

The Blu-ray Drive uses LightScribe Disc Labeling. Developed by HP, LightScribe burns a durable, high-quality label directly onto special discs which have a thin dye coating on the label side.

The LG BH08LS20 is accompanied by a disc containing PowerDVD, Power2Go, PowerProducer, LabelPrint, PowerBackup and MediaShow by CyberLink.

The BDR-205 is the first 12x drive, which is an upgrade from previous 8x drive speeds. For users wanting to remain on the cutting edge of technology, the new market of Blu-ray writers and recorders has been established. The impressive 12x drive speed is perfect for users who can make use of the devices powerful features.

The Pioneer Blu-ray recorder is a great choice for users who use a great deal of storage. With the equivalent of 10 single layer DVDs on one BD-R DL disc, it is a powerful choice for those needed to store massive amounts of data and media in physical form.

The Pioneer is also a great choice for those in multimedia. While options exist for data storage, there is no substitute for having the ability to store high levels of multimedia on one single disc.

Latest Prices for the Pioneer BDR-S03XLB

It would seem that the Blu-Ray format has been moving quite swiftly down the road to ubiquity. The players themselves have grown quite common lately as prices have come down from the shamefully high levels inherent to any new technology. The real milestone of note, however, is the increasing availability of Blu-Ray writers for the average computer owner. Since the downfall of the competing HD-DVD format, tech companies have been abandoning their seats on the fence and landing squarely in the victor’s camp.

Pioneer has offered up its easily affordable BDR-S03XLB internal Blu-Ray recorder. With a price tag well under 200 pounds, it makes for a simple upgrade to your computer. While it understandably requires a bit more power than a plain CD-R drive, its system requirements of 1.8 GHz processor power and 1 GB of RAM mean that you won’t need a supercharged powerhouse of a PC to use the BDR-S03XLB. Its SATA interface provides speedy transfer rates and an easy installation of the hardware.

The BDR-S03XLB runs on Windows XP as well as Vista, so you’re unlikely to run into compatibility problems there. It also comes bundled with Cyberlink writing software with which to get started. As far as I can see, the sole drawback of a Blu-Ray writer is not an inherent fault but a personal lack of the frequent need to burn a whopping 25 or 50 GB disc. This might seem to limit Blu-Ray recorders to a niche market, but with its admirable specs Pioneer’s BDR-S03XLB is also fully capable of replacing whatever optical drive you might already be using. It writes standard and Dual-layer DVDs at 16x and 8x respectively, as well as boasting a 32x CD-R write speed.

This latest offering from Pioneer replaces the solid and reliable BDR-202BK but adds a few new tricks under the hood.

Although on the outside the unit looks remarkably average the tweaks internally have improved the read and write speeds of all of the supported formats. Most notbably of these is the ablility now to write to BD-R discs at 8x speed to either single layer, 25GB or dual layer 50GB BD-R media discs. Although the BDR-203BK can still only achieve a 2x write spead to the BD-RE media these updated units are now able to support writing to dual layer re-writable discs. For users accessing lots of Blu-Ray stored data the speed of reads has significantly been enhanced. Single layer discs are now able to be read at 8x speed, up from 5x and dual layer is now topping out 6x, up from 2x.

Despite these excellent speeds it’s going to take a few months before Blu-Ray discs that support these speeds are readily available.

THe Pioneer BDR-203BK’s premium price shows what a cutting edge Blu-Ray device this is but thankfully Pioneer has packaged the drive with the Blu-Ray Disc Suite 6 from Cyberlink.
