One of Panasonic’s latest viewing and recording offerings is the DMR-BS880, which is a newer version of the DMR-BS850 but with some great new features. The most striking advantage that the DMR-BS880 has over its predecessor is that the Twin HD Satellite Tuner, first introduced in the BS850, it can record material from any channel this feature places the BS880 streets above its competitors and earlier versions of the machine because it means you can watch one channel while recording one or more other channels. Although the general features of the BS880 and the BS850 are much the same, this version is powerful due to the size of its huilt in hard disk and its ability to contain seventy plus hours of top quality HD recordings.

If you like a classy looking device then you won’t be disappointed with this design. The BS880 Blu-Ray Recorder is stylishly finished in smooth black and the silver strip around the bottom of the casing gives it a design edge. If you are one of those people who has problems with seeing the display on your machine, then this one won’t be a problem as the display panel is bright and the programme information legible. Those people who like adding extra gadgets and devices to their equipment won’t be disappointed as there are plenty of input and output sockets for you to play around with. The addition of a USB port on the right side of the machine and the SD card are the things that make the BS880 so versatile and it takes no time at all to hook up your MP3 to the machine and transfer the files to the hard disk.

The BS880 has a much clearer and easier to read navigation panel than the BS850, it’s colours are brighter and it is generally a better presentation than before so it is much easier to see what recordings you have. Yet another improvement on the BS850 is the newer version’s functions menu, it contains more information and the icons and the graphics are much better than before. The video outputs on the BS850 have been dumped but the BS880 still has two scars one that picks up and feeds the signals from other applications and the other for output. . One of the best things about this machine is that it allows you to record Freesat television in its original quality when you use the DR recording mode, because it uses the digital bitestream the picture remains the same as it was originally.

With the BS880 you can burn any of the programmes you’ve reorded on the hard drive to Blu-ray or DVD and swap recordings with others. As with the BS850 users still have to be mindful of copyright when you record onto Blu-ray however, the notification system on this is much better than on the previous model. While the BS880 has a tremendous amount going for it, many Blu-ray fans will be put off by the price tag.
