Panasonic DMR-BS850 HD Freesat+ Blu-Ray Recorder Latest Price Comparison

Panasonic are releasing on the 26th June 2009 their first integrated Twin Tuner, Freesat HD Blu-Ray Recorder, the DMR-BS850!

Panasonic have been at the forefront of pushing out support for the Freesat platform integrating the receiver into its Television sets so it’s no suprise that this extends the market and fills an obvious void when it comes to archiving in HD.

The twin tuner means that you are able to record two different programmes simultaneously and if you have a Panasonic Viera TV that supports the Viera Link function then you can use this to instigate the recordings on the DMR-BS850.

Video Formats

Once you have recorded your progammes to the generous 500GB hard drive it can then be saved into H.264 format resulting in a smaller programme foot print whilst retaining the HD quality.  The inclusion of the H.264 format means that users are able to better manage their hard drive space as well as Blu-Ray archiving.  One Blu-Ray disc can store up to a useful 24 hours of HD content allowing you to archive an entire programme season to a single blu-ray disc.

Sound Formats

The Panasonic DMR-BS850 supports both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-Master Audio Essential on Blu-Ray playback.  Obviously you’ll need to connect the Blu-Ray Recorder to a suitbale surround sound amplifier but once connected you’ll be able to enjoy majestic 7.1 channel surround sound from your Blu-Ray discs.

The DMR-BS850 supports the ability to record images from an HD camcorder or Panasonics range of Lumix cameras either to the hard disk or to a Blu-Ray disc.  Additionally you can rip your music CD’s to the hard disk and using Gracenote the sony title and artist are captured on the resulting recording.

Freesat+ gives access to over 140 digital television and radio channels and the beauty of the twin tuner is that should there be a clash between your two favourite programmes you can record them both at the same time!

The freesat+ is controlled via an 8 day Electronic Programme Guide (EPG).  This simple on-screen guide makes it easy to find and select what you want to record.

Series Record

If you regularly record a programme then you can set the recorder once and get it to record every episode in the series of your favourite programmes.  Handily these are then stacked all within a series folder making finding the recordings a simple task.

If you’ve ever set a manual video recorder or DVD recorder you’ll know the havoc a programme over running can have.  Missing the end of a World Cup final because it went to penalties can be devastating to a football fan.  Thankfully should a programme schedule change then you can be safe in the knowledge that your Panasonc DMR-BS850 will record without missing a heart beat!

Archving your recorded programmes from the hard disk to a Blu-Ray disc is lighteningly quick and for those who want to share their own movies and photos with their family they can write the content to a standard writeable DVD.

Pioneer BDR-203BK

This has now been replaced by the Pioneer BDR-205BK – Click Here To See Our Pioneer BDR-205BK Page

This latest offering from Pioneer replaces the solid and reliable BDR-202BK but adds a few new tricks under the hood.

Although on the outside the unit looks remarkably average the tweaks internally have improved the read and write speeds of all of the supported formats. Most notbably of these is the ablility now to write to BD-R discs at 8x speed to either single layer, 25GB or dual layer 50GB BD-R media discs. Although the BDR-203BK can still only achieve a 2x write spead to the BD-RE media these updated units are now able to support writing to dual layer re-writable discs. For users accessing lots of Blu-Ray stored data the speed of reads has significantly been enhanced. Single layer discs are now able to be read at 8x speed, up from 5x and dual layer is now topping out 6x, up from 2x.

Despite these excellent speeds it’s going to take a few months before Blu-Ray discs that support these speeds are readily available.

THe Pioneer BDR-203BK’s premium price shows what a cutting edge Blu-Ray device this is but thankfully Pioneer has packaged the drive with the Blu-Ray Disc Suite 6 from Cyberlink. This software handles the play back of DVD and Blu-Ray movies care of PowerDVD and also includes a basic video and photo editing software as well as disc writing.

LG BE06 External Blu-Ray Writer

Check out the newer LG BE08 Blu-Ray Recorder <>

Hook the LG BE06 to your PC or MAC by simply by connecting it up to a standard USB 2.0 port.

Nobody could argue that this offering from LG is an ugly duckling.  The sleek and stylish unit operates either vertically or horizontally and comes in an ultra shiney white gloss enclosure featuring a rather nifty touch sensitive eject button.

The fact that this is an external model means that even the novice consumer can purchase and install this drive in a matter of minutes.  The majority of blu-ray writers on the market today are for internal installation into a PC so a working understanding of the inside of a PC was required.

Along with the USB connection the LG BEo6 also requires the connection of it’s power supply so this isn’t the holy grail for the portable worker but at least you can take this drive away with your laptop and enjoy high definition blu-ray movies.

If you where an adopter of the now defunct HD DVD format then you’ll be pleased to hear that the drive is at least able to read your HD DVD’s so that you aren’t forced to sell them for a miniscule amount whilst you then search out the blu-ray version.

As one would expect the BE06 can handle the play back and writing to DVD and CD’s even if it’s not at todays cutting edge speeds.

LightSribe is include to allow for the printing of images and texts onto supported DVDs but the fact that it takes over 20 minutes to print these images may make this feature less appealing.

The LG BE06 features a very respectable 6 speed writing capability but with 4 speed BD-R still being fairly rare it will take a few months before media is available to make the most of these write speeds in either 25GB single layer or 50GB dual layer formats.
